RUNNELS SCHOOL ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
FOR COMPUTERS AND THE INTERNET

Runnels School is pleased to offer students access to computers and the Internet. In order to keep this privilege, however, students must agree to certain rules of behavior. Students are responsible for appropriate behavior on the computer and the Internet just as they are in the classroom, on the playground, or on a school field trip. It is expected that students will comply with the rules listed below. Access is a privilege which may be revoked if abused. A good rule of thumb for students is that they should not access, download, send, print or do anything which they would rather not have their teachers or parents see. Computer storage facilities (disks) are not private. Like school lockers, they may be inspected by the technology coordinator. The technology coordinator may delete without warning material which is taking up excessive space. Students should never install or download any commercial software, shareware or freeware without explicit permission from the technology coordinator. Illegal copying of software or of another student’s work is prohibited. No student should intrude into another student’s files. No profane, abusive or impolite language should be used or accessed.

SPECIFIC RULES:

  1. Do not use a computer to harm other people or their work.
  2. Do not damage the computer or network in any way.
  3. Do not install illegal software, shareware or freeware.
  4. Do not violate copyright laws.
  5. Do not view, send or display offensive messages or pictures.
  6. Do not waste limited resources such as disk space or printing capacity.
  7. Do not knowingly use a disk or download a file infected with a virus on any school computer.
  8. Do not trespass into another’s folders, work or files.
  9. Notify a teacher immediately if you encounter materials which violate these rules.
  10. Be prepared to be held accountable for your actions and for the loss of these privileges.
