Runnels School and the arts have been
close friends since the founding of the school in 1965. Our
unique program, serving preschoolers through high school students
preparing for college, has always reflected the high value
placed on the role of the arts in the human experience.
Visual Arts
Studio art flourishes at Runnels. Students at all levels participate
in a disciple-based art program. The art program, which begins
at the preschool level and continues through high school,
includes both studio art and art appreciation. Student artwork
decorates offices and lobbies throughout both campuses, and
may also be found on display in public libraries and in local
businesses. The school spring art show is a widely anticipated
annual event, judged by professional artists from the area.
Performing Arts
Band, strings, chorus and ballet are available as electives
at Runnels, beginning at the fourth grade. Consequently, junior
high and high school bands and string orchestras perform at
an advanced level and private tutoring would be required to
begin instrumental music at the seventh grade or higher. The
Runnels bands and orchestras perform winter and spring concerts
in December and May. Runnels music students traditionally
collect many "Superior" ratings at solo and ensemble
festivals. Runnels students appear each year in the EBR
Honor Choir, EBR Honor Band, and EBR Honor Orchestra. Classical
ballet is available to students in the 4th grade through high
school. Drama classes and productions have been an important
part of the Runnels experience for over thirty years, and
received a tremendous boost in 2001 with the construction
of the Runnels Theater for the Performing Arts. Beginning
in preschool, Runnels students are given the opportunity to
participate in a variety of drama performances. Recent Jr.
High and High School productions of theatrical favorites and
less well known works have included Shooting Stars, Song of
Survival, Steel Magnolias, Diary of Anne Frank, Arsenic and
Old Lace, Room Service, The Belle of Amherst, and Glass Menagerie.
Major musical productions Oklahoma!, Music Man, Annie,
Bye Bye Birdie, and Into the Woods have combined Orchestra,
chorus, and dance departments and students of all ages. These
productions have brought Broadway to our beautiful 500 seat
theater!
